Not All VA Postcards Are a Scam: Choose VA postcard campaign seeks to help veterans get VA healthcare

Recently, I sent an alert regarding a scam on veterans called “Veterans Savings Program.” Since there is a legitimate Medicare Savings Program seniors and anyone who qualifies for Medicare, hears about, it is easy to accept the idea of a veteran-specific program. It was a postcard scam to steal your credentials and identity.

However, the Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) does engage in legitimate postcard campaigns, and veterans need to be able to spot a fake and act on legitimate benefits they qualify for. Currently, there is a campaign called “Choose VA” being conducted.

There are almost 4 million veterans in the VA’s database of veterans who may qualify for VA healthcare and are not aware. Therefore, the VA is sending those veterans postcards to inform them to apply.

Whether the criteria have changed and changed and veterans who were previously denied qualify, or it is just to notify those who have never applied to do so, I am not sure. That is why if you receive a postcard that says CHOOSE VA on it, do not ignore it.

If you are not sure a communication you have received is legitimate or a scam, the Department of Veterans has a website called VSAFE, where you can check and report any potential scams. You can go to vsafe.gov and check. You can also call the VSAFE Fraud Hotline at 833-38V-SAFE (8-7233).

In today’s environment, we all need to be vigilant and diligent in verifying whether something that sounds too good to be true is a scam or legitimate. You do not want to run the risk of giving up hard-earned benefits worth thousands of dollars to fear. So, do your homework, use tools like VSAFE to validate and verify, and when in doubt, use Ai like ChatGPT, Claude, GROK and others, and ask it to check if there is a scam being reported pertaining to the message you are receiving. Do not ignore.
